Congratulations on becoming a school governor!
New governors are expected to attend induction training as soon as possible after appointment, since it covers the key information needed to be an effective governor.
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
You have the choice of doing all three sessions in one day or as three separate sessions. If you sign up for the separate sessions you will automatically be added to all 3 modules. Please make sure you can attend all modules before making a booking.
Module 1 - Wednesday 2nd October (18:00 - 20:00). Module 2 - Wednesday 9th October (18:00 - 20:00) & Module 3 - Wednesday 16th October (18:00 - 20:00)
Learning outcomes
Module 1 - The Strategic Role of Governors
Session objectives:
- To understand the governors' strategic role
- To contribute effectively to strategic planning and target setting at your school
- To appreciate the powers and duties of governing bodies
- To relate the characteristics of effective schools to the strategic role of governors
Module 2 - The Critical Friend Role of Governors
Session objectives:
- To understand the need to balance challenge and support
- To recognise how you can support your school
- To enable you to contribute effectively to monitoring and evaluation
- To be more confident in making monitoring visits to your school
Module 3 - The Accountability Role of Governors
Session objectives:
- To understand how governing bodies are accountable
- To recognise what makes a governing body effective
- To understand the governing body procedures and meetings
- To appreciate the range of support available to you as a governor
