This session is for all chairs, or governors aspiring to this role and wanting to understand the key roles and responsibilities.

An effective chair of governors should:

  • Give a clear lead in organising the governing body's work
  • Delegate roles and ensure other governors are fully involved
  • Manage meetings efficiently
  • Hold regular meetings with the headteacher
  • Keep other governors fully informed
  • Co-operate with other agencies to support school improvement

Learning outcomes    

At the end of the session delegates will be able to:

  • Explore the different aspects of being the chair, including the importance of developing effective relationships with the headteacher and other governors
  • Consider some of the practical demands of the role, such as chairing a meeting, setting the agenda and working effectively with the clerk
  • Understand how to take the lead on strategy and accountability.
