Course summary:

Ofsted highlights the importance of all staff who teach reading having the knowledge and skills to do effectively. This course will ensure teaching assistants are equipped to support their pupils in becoming confident and fluent readers.

In order to be successful in the next stage of their education it is important that all pupils can read confidently and fluently by the time they leave primary school. However, for many, reading remains a struggle. This course will focus on both the word reading (including phonics) and comprehension skills which are required for children to become successful readers.

We will examine the skills and knowledge needed to be a good word reader and a good comprehender and, through a range of practical ideas and activities, explore ways in teaching assistants can help their pupils become successful and confident readers. The importance of fluency in reading will be explored and a range of ideas for promoting this shared. We will also consider activities and strategies for ensuring that 1:1 and small group reading sessions have a positive impact on learning.
