Course summary:

This course focuses on ensuring that our pupils get off to the best possible start on the journey to becoming competent and confident readers.

Reading … feeds pupils' imagination and opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds. National Curriculum Document

Laying a good foundation for reading in Reception and KS1 is essential if pupils are going to become fluent and confident readers by the time they leave primary school.

This course covers the two aspects of early reading identified in the National Curriculum word level (decoding ) and comprehension. We will explore what the new inspection framework says about both of these elements and consider how we can ensure that we build a firm foundation in reading or all our pupils. During the course reference will also be made to 'The Reading Framework' document published summer 2021

Course content includes:

  • the language of reading
  • the importance of developing pupils listening comprehension skills
  • reading comprehension skills
  • developing fluency in reading
  • widening pupils vocabulary
  • word reading and phonics

Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the trainer in order to ask questions and share ideas.
